The opening
The first minutes may emphasize volatile citrus, aromatic, green or alcoholic effects. This stage can change quickly.
The heart
As the opening softens, floral, spicy, fruity or aromatic themes may become easier to notice.
The drydown
Later impressions often emphasize woods, musks, amber effects, resins or sweetness. Development is continuous rather than three exact switches.

Skin, climate, clothing, application distance and number of sprays can influence perception. Familiarity and expectation also affect which notes a person notices.

- Notice the opening without deciding immediately.
- Check the fragrance again after it settles.
- Compare skin and fabric carefully because fabric can retain scent longer.
- Write down the character you notice rather than chasing every listed note.
