Perfume decant sizes: how long does 5 ml really last?
The only question that matters when choosing between a 5 ml and a 10 ml decant is how many wears you get. Here are the numbers, without the marketing.

Sprays per millilitre
A standard fine mist atomiser releases roughly 0.1 ml per full press. That gives you a simple conversion.
- 1 ml is about 10 sprays.
- 5 ml is about 50 sprays.
- 10 ml is about 100 sprays.
- 100 ml is about 1000 sprays.
These are approximations. Travel atomisers with a shorter stroke deliver slightly less, and a half press delivers less again. Treat them as a planning number rather than a guarantee.
Turning sprays into weeks
Most people use between 2 and 4 sprays per wear. Heavier concentrations need fewer, and fresh citrus fragrances need more because they fade faster.
At 3 sprays per wear, worn every day, a 5 ml decant lasts around 16 days and a 10 ml decant lasts around 33 days. If you rotate between three fragrances rather than wearing one daily, multiply those figures by three.
How concentration changes the maths
Concentration is the percentage of perfume oil in the alcohol base. Higher concentration means you need fewer sprays and the fragrance lasts longer on skin, so a 5 ml extrait goes considerably further than a 5 ml eau de toilette.
- Eau de toilette. Around 5 to 15 percent oil. Expect 3 to 5 hours and use 3 to 4 sprays.
- Eau de parfum. Around 15 to 20 percent oil. Expect 5 to 8 hours and use 2 to 3 sprays.
- Extrait or parfum. Around 20 to 40 percent oil. Expect 8 hours or more and use 1 to 2 sprays.
Which size to pick
A short decision rule that holds up in practice.
- Choose 5 ml when you have not worn the fragrance before, when you are testing several at once, or when you want something for travel only.
- Choose 10 ml when you already know you like it, when it is your rotation fragrance for a season, or when it is a fresh scent you will spray more heavily anyway.
- Choose the full bottle when you have finished a 10 ml and immediately wanted more. At that point the per millilitre price finally works in your favour.
Making a decant last longer
- Spray onto moisturised skin. Fragrance evaporates faster from dry skin.
- Spray pulse points, not clothing. Fabric holds scent but wastes the top notes.
- Do not rub your wrists together. It crushes the opening and shortens the life of the fragrance on skin.
- Store the decant away from sunlight, radiators and bathroom humidity.
- Reduce by one spray for anything labelled extrait, parfum or intense.

About 50 sprays from a standard atomiser. At 3 sprays per wear that is roughly two weeks of daily use, or around seven weeks if you rotate between three fragrances.
How long does a 10 ml decant last?
About 100 sprays, which works out to roughly a month of daily wear at 3 sprays, or a full season if the fragrance is part of a rotation.
Is 5 ml enough to know if I like a fragrance?
Yes, comfortably. Fifteen or more full wears is far more than you need to know whether a fragrance suits your skin, your climate and the way people react to it.
Does a decant last as long on skin as the full bottle?
Yes. Longevity comes from the fragrance concentration, not the size of the container it was shipped in.
Should I buy 5 ml or 10 ml first?
Start with 5 ml for anything you have never worn. Move to 10 ml once you know you reach for it, and only buy the full bottle after you have finished a 10 ml.
Test three or four at 5 ml before you commit to anything. A set of five costs less than most single full bottles.
