Are perfume decants authentic?

The honest answer

A decant is authentic when the seller filled it from a genuine retail bottle and told you the truth about it. A decant is not authentic when the seller filled it from a cheaper source, a clone, or a diluted mix and let you assume otherwise.

Because the container is neutral, you cannot verify a decant by looking at it. There is no box, no batch code on the atomiser, no hologram. This is the real weakness of the format, and any seller who does not acknowledge it is not being straight with you.

What you are actually trusting

When you buy a decant you are trusting three things.

• The source bottle. That the seller bought a genuine bottle from a legitimate channel rather than a grey market lot of unknown provenance.
• The transfer. That the liquid was moved cleanly, into new glass, without contamination from a previous fragrance.
• The description. That the concentration on the label matches what is in the bottle. An eau de toilette sold as an extrait is a fake even if the liquid is genuine.

Eight signs a decant seller is not trustworthy

1. The price per millilitre is far below the full bottle price per millilitre. Decants should cost more per millilitre, not less.
2. The listing uses brand logos, brand photography and brand packaging as though the brand endorsed it.
3. The word inspired, dupe or clone appears anywhere near the fragrance name.
4. There is no statement of who did the rebottling.
5. Discontinued or reformulated fragrances are permanently in stock in large volumes.
6. The seller will not say where the source bottles come from.
7. There is no returns or complaint route, only a chat account.
8. Every fragrance in the catalogue is the same price regardless of what the full bottle costs.

How to check a decant once it arrives

You cannot batch code a decant, but you can still test it.

• Wear it against a counter sample. Spray the decant on one wrist and the department store tester on the other. Fakes usually survive the first two minutes and fall apart in the drydown.
• Check the longevity. A genuine extrait that vanishes in ninety minutes is not a genuine extrait.
• Check the colour. Compare against the manufacturer photograph. Large colour differences are worth querying.
• Smell the atomiser itself. A decant that carries a second fragrance underneath was filled in dirty equipment.

Decants remain a possible future phase. They will not be offered unless the source, sizes, preparation process, packaging, availability and policies can be published accurately.
